We began our activity in 2002 with the lecture of Prof. Mehmet Ölmez from Yildiz Teknik Univeristy “Turkic languages trough centuries”. Prof. Mehmet Ölmez also conducted a seminar on Tuvan. (“Position of Tuvan among the Turkic languages”)

Approximately at the same time we hosted another visiting professor who came to us from remote Yakutia. It was Prof. Anatoliy Gogolev from the State University of Yakutsk. He delivered a lecture on the situation of the Yakut language in Saha Republic

Some of subsequent events:

  • 17 October of 2003 – Dr. Ildikó Bellér-Hann (Orientwissenschaftliches Zentrum, Martin-Luther-Universität) “Temperamental Neighbours. Uighur-Han Relations in Xinjiang (Northwest China)”, as well as a series of seminars on the culture and language of the Uighurs in the subsequent days
  • 27 March 2004 – a celebration of the Nauruz holiday at the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Warsaw and visiting a yurt in the ambassadorial residence in Anin
  • 5 April 2004 – Turkish-Kazakh Day in the Działyński Palace in Poznań organized by our Turkology students with Turkish and Kazakh meals, dance, plays and theatre performance
  • 29 April 2004 – a meeting with guests from Kazakhstan invited by the mayor of Poznań on the occasion of Poland’s accession to the European Union
  • 19 May 2005 – a meeting with the former ambassador of Poland to Kazakhstan, Mr. Zdzisław Nowicki
  • 24 May 2005 – a lecture by Prof. Dariusz Kołodziejczyk (Institute of History, Warsaw University) “Polish missions in Istanbul and problems with ceremonial”
  • 24 May 2005 – Oriental festival organized on the occasion of the creation of the Institute of Oriental Studies (ceased to exist 31 March 2008)
  • 25-27 June 2005 – fieldwork on Tatar cemeteries in Kruszyniany and Bohoniki, East Poland; discovery of a gravestone inscribed with Arabic characters, dated 111[1] (c.e. 1699)
  • 3-6 April 2006 – our first Erasmus visitor from Turkey, Dr. Hülya Plancı (Centre of Turkish Language Teaching, Anadolu University, Eskişehir)
  • 9 May 2006 – a meeting with the group of school children and teachers from Kahramanmaraş, Turkey, visiting a partner school in Poznań district within a programme of Comenius scheme
  • 10 May 2006 – a lecture by Dr. Sadik Bahçe, an ethnic Karachai, from Anadolu University, Eskişehir, “The Karachay minority in Turkey”
  • 10-14 May 2006 – Days of the Turkish Culture organised by the Association of Turkology Students
  • 16-17 May 2006 – visit of Mr. Celal Tok, director of the Turkish National Library in Ankara
  • 05 March 2007 – a lecture by Prof. Marek Stachowski, the Institute of Oriental Philology, Jagiellonian University, Cracow, “Turkic, Uralic, Turkish and the history of comparative linguistics”
  • 20 March 2007 – Kazakh Day celebrated on the occasion of the Nauruz Holiday, donation of a yurt to the our department by the Embassy Republics of Kazakhstan
  • 17 May 2007 – a lecture by Dr. Şenay Özdemir, Mersin University, Turkey “Osmanlı Deniz Hukuku”
  • 18 May 2007 – a lecture by Dr. Şenay Özdemir, Mersin University, Turkey “Garp Ocakları Korsanları”
  • 28-29 May 2007 – First Conference of Polish Turkologists organized by our department
  • 5-6 June 2008 – Second Conference of Polish Turkologists, in Warsaw by the Department of Turkology and Peoples of Central Asia, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Warsaw University, with the participation of Gulayhan Aqtay, Andrzej Drozd, Henryk Jankowski, Katarzyna Stefaniak from our department.
  • 26 November 2008 – visit of mr Faruk Amil, cultural attaché of the Turkish Embassy in Poland and handing over books as a gift to our institution.
  • 21 April 2009 – inauguration of the Section of Kazakh Studies.
  • 28-29 May 2009 – Third Conference of Polish Turkologists, organized in Krakow by the Institute of Oriental Philology, Jagiellonian University, with the participation of the following staff members and doctoral students of our department: Gulayhan Aqtay, Andrzej Drozd, Henryk Jankowski, Otgonsuch Cagaan and Katarzyna Stefaniak-Rak.
  • 26 April 2010 – the lecture The state of Modern Kazakh Literature by Prof. Dr. Güliya Piraliyeva, dean of the Faculty of Philology, Girls’ Pedagogical University, Almaty
  • 7-8 October 2010 – Fourth Conference of Polish Turkologists, organized in Poznań by our department, with the participation of our following staff members and doctoral students: Gulayhan Aqtay, Andrzej Drozd, Henryk Jankowski, Otgonsuch Cagaan and Katarzyna Stefaniak-Rak; for more details see PAN.
  • 07 October 2010 – Islam in Kazakhstan. The present-day state, a workshop with the participation of our guests from Kazakhstan, Aqtöbe: Prof. Dr. Janna Tektiğul, Prof. Dr. Aqmonşaq Tilew, Dr. Bağiyla Muratbek, Dr. Külşat Qondıbay and Aray Omarova from Almaty.
  • 10 December 2010 – lecture by Prof. Dr. Peter Zieme (Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin) – The Old Uighur Golden Light Sutra (Altun yaruk sudur) and the Confession of Sins and by Prof. Dr. Claus Schönig (Institut für Turkologie, Freie Universität Berlin) – Notes on the Development of Turkic
  • 16 March 2011 – inauguration of a series of workshops “Meetings in the Yurt”, convened jointly by the Section Kazakh Studies and the Eastern Institute, with the participation of our guests from Aqtöbe and Almaty, the first topic being Everyday life at a university
  • 21 March 2011 – celebration of the feast of Nauryz, organized by our students’ Turcological Working Group
  • 25 March 2011 – The media in Kazakhstan at present, meeting with Dr. Amanqos Mekteptegi, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty.
  • 15 April 2011 – Modern Kazakh Arts. The problems of theatre and cinema; meeting with Aydın Saqamanov, film director and lecturer at the Kazakh Academy of Arts, Almaty.
  • 1-2 June 2011 – Fifth Conference of Polish Turkologists, organized in Warsaw by the Department of Turkology and Peoples of Central Asia, Faculty of Oriental Studies, Warsaw University, with the participation of Dorota Smętek and Henryk Jankowski from our department.
  • 8 October 2012 - Visit to our section paid by Vice-rector of Istanbul University, Prof. Dr. Zeynep Çiğdem Kayacan, and Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Özkan.
  • December 2013 - Ten years of the Section of Turkic, Mongolian and Korean Studies. Jubilee publication has been released: Henryk Jankowski (red.). 2013. Turkey, Kazakhstan and the Crimea. Ten years of Turkology in Poznań. Poznań: Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM

  • January 2017 – A special issue of Türk Dilleri Araştırmaları. Festschrift für Henryk Jankowski anlässlich seines 65. Geburtstags 26, 2 (2016) has been published on the occasion of professor Henryk Jankowski’s 65th birthday

Our department invites young researchers from Central Asia and elsewhere of the Turkic world, who visit Poznań, and organizes meetings, workshops and lectures with their participation. We may point to a few events of this kind:

  • 22 November 2002 – a lecture by Mr. Asqar Abdrahmanov “The nation to be discovered”
  • 20 May 2003 – a lecture by Mr. Qurtmolla Abdulganiyev, the Crimea “The Crimean Tatars in the past and today”
  • 6 November 2003 – a lecture by Nartsis Shukuralieva “Sociopolitical changes in Kirgistanie in the past ten years”
  • 16 April 2004 – a by Otabek Naimov “Jadidi movement in Uzbekistan”
  • 30 April 2004 – a lecture by Nartsis Shukuralieva “Position of religion and the religious life in Kyrgystan”
  • 30 November 2011 - Polish-Turkish language and literature workshop with the participation of our staff and the Section of Kazakh Studies as well as the guests invited from Turkey.

Students from Turkey come every year to study in our department thanks to Erasmus Program. In recent years came:
2012/13: 6 students and 1 PhD student,
2013/14: 7 students,
2014/15: 4 students,
2015/16: 4 students,
2016/17: 8 students.

In the past the following academic teachers were employed at the sections of Turkic, Mongolian and Korean Studies as well as Kazakh Studies:
